Being a mother and a small business owner can be extremely difficult, but we’ve found an incredible powerhouse that has managed to balance the best of both worlds. We interviewed Barb Kaill, founder at Lucky Penny Provisions about her baking business and journey to motherhood. Check out her story:
Barb Kaill, Lucky Penny Provisions
This summer, after five years in business I made the decision to close my cafe, Lucky Penny Coffee Co., and reimagine the brand. The spin-off was originally developed as a Covid pivot, to get us through three lockdowns and sixteen months of reduced capacity, and limited service. Now, Lucky Penny Provisions provides three subscription packages and operates popups and an online bakery & pantry with local delivery by eBike.
Four years ago, single at 34, I decided to get on with the show and become a mom on my own. By way of donor and IUI, I am now a proud and happy single mom by choice to a joyful and energetic three-year-old.
Truthfully? It doesn’t always! The ways in which it doesn’t can be frustrating: never “really” being able to put your work away, doing payroll while in labor... But, I am so thankful for the ways in which it makes my parenting life better: writing my own schedule, doing work that I love (kids should see their parents HAPPY!) It can be a tough balance between family life and work-life, but I am so thankful my son is growing up watching his mom making things happen.
The first time N said, “Mom, can we go to Lucky Penny today?” my heart melted.
It helps to manage that life-work balance! Knowing I have a certain, guaranteed number of orders coming in each month, means I can focus my energy on other parts of the business, and have more time for after-work fun!
